Natives seeking a piece of the action at the Mount Mackenzie ski resort

Revelstoke Times Review

Leader of the Okanagan Indian Band seeking a piece of the action on Mount Mackenzie were in town last week to talk with City officials and ski resort developer Robert Powadiuk .

We have identified a goal but we can't say what it is yet," Chief Fabian Alexis said in an interview last Tuesday.
We still have some homework to do before we can reveal our objectives publicly."

Alexis said the band's talks were very productive and couched in reasonable and open-minded language.
I think - I really believe - it can go somewhere," he said.

City Administrator Don DeGagne agreed with Alexis and said the talks were productive.

Powadiuk welcomed the discussions with the band and said the project they have in mind is feasible if it meets certain conditions. In particular, he would like to see the band spearhead a project that involves the two other Indian bands - the Ktunaxa and the Shuswap - that claim to have traditionally used this region.

It makes much more sense to have one project that involves all three bands than three separate ones," he said Thursday.

The Okanagan people used this area for 10,000 years," Alexis said. The courts have said the province doesn't have the right to interfere with aboriginal rights."

That includes a right to benefit economically from logging, mining and resort development, Alexis said, adding that the band would like to see more Okanagan band members living and working in the area.

In line with this the band is busy reasserting its right to use the area in a traditional manner.

Last week about 15 Okanagans from B.C. and Washington State set out in hand-carved dugout canoes from Enderby on Wednesday. They paddled to Sicamous and then drove their canoes to Shelter Bay where they camped Wednesday night before launching them south down Arrow Lake. They intend to paddle to Castlegar.
Band Cultural Coordinator Leon Louis said the trip is intended, in part, to set an example for youths who feel culturally adrift.

It also serves a political purpose, too," Alexis said, alluding to the band's desire to reassert its right to use the area.

Could they be seeking some timeshare action? time will tell....

Dubai to become key interrnational timeshare market

MENAFN - Middle East North Africa . Financial Network: "Dubai to become key interrnational timeshare market
MENAFN - 19/07/2005

(MENAFN) According to a top industry official, the new timeshare legislation to be issued by the Dubai Government later on this year, could raise Dubai's stature as one of the top three timeshare markets in the world, alongside Orlando, Florida, and Las Vegas, Gulf News reported.

Statistically, more than 7 million people worldwide own more than 10 million timeshare weeks at around 6,000 resorts in 95 countries, and industry sales volumes now exceed $10 billion annually. In the Middle East and North Africa, about 90,000 families own vacation resorts.

Interval International is opening a Gulf sales office in Dubai, based at the Dubai Airport Free Zone, which will work with developers to expand the number of Middle East resorts and destinations available to members.

It has been working with the government and key industry professionals to create a sound regulatory platform that provides consumer protection and allows legitimate businesses the ability to grow, and was involved in the recent timeshare awareness and best practice seminar, organised by Dubai's Department of Economic Development.

He said major timeshare resort developers are ready to invest in beachfront developments as Dubai has the right mix for such ventures.

Kuwait-based International Financial Advisors (IFA) is investing $600 million in a timeshare resort at the Palm Jumeirah, the first in the UAE.

According to RCI, the global timeshare exchange company, despite having a sizeable vacation members in the Middle East, only 38 resorts offer timeshare to the region's members. RCI has opened its regional office at Dubai Internet City in May 2003."

Now all Dubai have to do is update their timeshare laws...

Amend the Timeshare Act Amend the Timeshare Act so Timeshare owners wont lose their property

Royal Gazette: "Amend Timeshare Act, Swan urges Government

By Matthew Taylor

Opposition Senate leader Kim Swan again urged Government to get on with amending the Timeshare Act.
Timeshare owners who bought years ago are worried they might lose their property as their 25 year leases are up this year.

He said Government had been promising law changes since 1999 but had done nothing and were now saying they didn’t want to rush into hasty legislation.

He said: “We have seen the Minister for Tourism of Transport – when he wants to do something he gets on with it, irrespective of public opinion.”
Speaking in the Senate’s motion to adjourn yesterday Sen. Swan said: “Those who made the ultimate commitment to Bermuda by purchasing multiple weeks were given the impression this matter would have been dealt with sometime ago.”

But he said the earliest it would be done would be three or four months down the line.
“It will do further damage, this Government is procrastinating.”
Sen. Swan also spoke about the need to clamp down on beggars, particularly those who intimidate people by gripping or blocking them.

He also complained about Government not giving notice about changes to the Bail Act made since the House session before yesterday’s sitting.

Senate leader Larry Mussenden said notice had been given to the Opposition spokesman on that area but he agreed temporarily withdraw the bill until today’s sitting.

Today Senators will also discuss the Criminal Code Amendment Act which aims to bring in automatic three year prison sentences for those caught carrying knives and weapons in public without reasonable excuse.
